Greetings from the Institute of International Education (IIE)! As an alumnus of the 2002 Toyota International Teacher Program to Japan, we wanted to let you all know about a successor initiative for the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program, the Japan-U.S. Teacher Exchange Program for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

The Japan-U.S. Teacher Exchange Program for ESD will provide up to 48 U.S. teachers and administrators with the opportunity to travel to Japan on this fully-funded program to learn about ESD efforts and strengthen ESD curricula in both countries. ESD is “a vision of education that seeks to balance human and economic well-being with cultural traditions and respect for the earth’s natural resources,” according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Up to 48 educators from Japan will travel to the U.S. in late April, and up to 48 educators from the U.S. will travel to Japan in June. At the end of the program in each country, all 96 educators will gather for a few days of joint collaboration. For more information about the program, or to access the online application, please visit our website at www.iie.org/ESDteacher.

I hope that you or another teacher or administrator from your school will decide to apply for this exciting opportunity! Please do not hesitate to contact my colleague, Susan Gundersen, at ESDteacher@iie.org or 888-527-2636 if you have any questions.
