I absolutely agree. Some of the best literature teaching that I've done is when we've been able to look at the context of the literature. I'd add the history and architecture as well. Students need to understand the world of the author to get a sense of the complexity of the writing. Count me in on the conversation.

I have this crazy idea that I want to ask this particular group to think about.
My idea is that students reading about times and places around the world would understand literature better if they know the great art and music of the period.
What do you think?
If you think the idea is worth following up on please lets talk about it.

Andrew - you might ask your question above as a crowdsoure question (so it does not get lost or buried in the comment wall) and I can broadcast it on a crowdsource Tuesday - if you're specific about your interests in the text it might also get you more feedback!

Hey LOS - do consider adding that info at the bottom of the discussion posts linked below - that way people in those discussions will be able to check out your feedback.

Iggy Pop is in the American film - what could be cooler?

We use Persepolis - it works great but only the first book. The second one has inappropriate topics, but the first is Marjane Satrapi's childhood view of growing up in Iran. Her black and white movie is also wonderfully done.

If you're not in the adolescent lit group and you do work with YA lit you may want to check out the incredible "Behind the YA Lit" article from the New Yorker I posted in that group today. Totally fascinating stuff!

Stay Groovy!!
