Materials | Computers with Internet access, copies of the handoutsOverview | In this lesson, students reflect on what they know about Neanderthal Man. Then, in light of new genetic findings, they investigate how and what we know about Neanderthals by searching online for archeological, structural and genetic evidence about our ancient relatives. They then reflect on what the information in Neanderthal DNA tells us about ourselves, and what it means to be human. Finally, they conduct additional research for further consideration of our ancient relatives.

Warm-up | Prior to class, arrange to have two students perform Op-Ed Contributor Teddy Wayne’s comedic piece “Date With a Neanderthal”as a skit for the class.
