With Black History Month around the corner, I thought I would share a blog post from Scott Woods that provides a list of books with African American characters. What he did intentionally when creating the list (and what I like about it) is he avoids what he calls "boycotts, buses, and baseball" themes.  This list has books that portray its characters in a wide variety of contexts that reflect modern life. I am always looking for a list like this to provide my students with ways to connect to stories. I can't vouch for all the books on the list, but I can say I loved "Yo! Yes?", "Tar Beach", and "Come, on Rain!" I look forward to reading the others!

MakeBeliefsComix.com has published a special free printable for Women's History Month at http://www.makebeliefscomix.com/Printables/print.php?category=Featu...

It asks: Imagine that you could talk with any woman in history whom you admire. Who would that be and what would you say to her.

You are welcome to print it out and also pin it on your Pinterest page. Hope you will share with your students.

Hi Lauren - this is a GREAT question.

Would you consider moving this question above us to the discussion forum? When you post your ? above your "affinity group" peeps can give you feedback. Because forum ?s have URLs it will be in there for the next person with a similar ? AND I can broadcast the question to the whole Ning on <a href="http://mcpopmb.ning.com/page/post-a-crowdsource">crowdsource Tuesday</a>.
Thanks to both of you for getting in the mix - as always - please share more cool ?'s and ideas!
RRG:)
PS - you might also post the question in the library media specialist group as those folks have lots of great ideas on this type of stuff!

I'm looking for short online biographies about past and present African American in a variety of fields.  I would like for my 2nd and 3rd year students to compare and contrast African Americans in a variety of fields such as business, music, mathematics, technology, sports, etc.  For example I would like a one student to compare and contrast Etta James and Beyonce.   Any suggestions on where to find good stuff?   I've tried typing different things into search engines with no luck.

If folks aren't aware of Heacox's work it is really good - should be a groovy seminar!

Hey there, elementary school teachers! Dr. Diane Heacox (associate professor of Education at St. Cate's in St. Paul, MN) is doing a webinar this Thursday, March 10 at 3pm CST: Defensible Differentiation: Succeeding in Academically Diverse Classrooms. This webinar is for beginners AND those of you who are already differentiating instruction in the classroom.  http://www.freespirit.com/Webinars

Patricia, that is great - you must have found the Classic Kids Comics SG in the Graphic Novels and Comics discussion forum, yes? Very cool - you should send a note to the author of the guides as he hangs out 'round these parts - Peter Gutierrez

There are lots of gems to be found in the discussion forums - when you hit view all (above) you can read through all the resources.

Peter has don't some other SG's and reviews in this group - you might also dig..
