I am currently seeking poetry that will fit into a 10th grade unit on Border Crossing and Living on the Edge. This is my first thematic unit ever. I am an MAT student so any advice would be welcome :) Any other suggestions of different texts from different genres (and media) would also be welcome. I was thinking about using some poetry by Gloria Anzaldua. Not sure.

    To Lella,

You should check out the work of the Chicano theatre group, Culture Clash. I don't know how much is available on-line. But they did one play called "Bordertown" which includes skits, monologues and poetry about life in San Diego. I particularly remember one skit where one actor plays a man named San Diego and another plays a woman, Tia Juana, and the actors personify how the two interact.

I would urge you to include non-fiction, in addition to poetry, about the reasons why people immigrate from Latin American countries to the US. The Right to Stay Home by David Bacon includes vignettes of people's true stories. Harvest of Empire is another informative book that was turned into a movie (includes violence).

    Hey Lelia,

Great question - I have a whole unit on this archived somewhere built around the movie "Under the Same Moon" - that said, do consider position your question up above us in the main discussion as a crowdsource ? as it will have a url so I can share it in a broadcast AND it will be archived and not get buried here.  Can't wait to hear more about your work!  RRG:)
