Ok, what am I missing here? Other than "call," I'm not getting how the emoji's translate to the same sentence. I think printing out this article, the one from the Emoji Dick link in the story, and having kids use the excerpt in our text book might be an interesting way to have them address Common Core Standards. I would have them break into groups, read through the passage, and then pick out 2-3 sentences to try to translate on their Smart Phones (only need one per group). I would then have them write a paper addressing the effectiveness of using the emoji's to re-tell the story, using quotes from the articles and their own experiences. If you do not have access to the technology for students to use, they could always create their own emojis from the explanations listed at http://www.grumdrig.com/emoji-list/ or http://www.iemoji.com/
Very cool ideas - yeah, it is not my native language - you might check out those lessons I put at the bottom - it really gets at the heart of the whole CCSS "close reading" thing.
