ART LESSON PLANS: The Civil War in Art (Chicago Collections)

Really cool resources created in collaboration between The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago History Museum, Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Library, The DuSable Museum of African American History and (take a breath) and The Newberry Library.

They have an excellent image gallery, and a massive set of classroom project PDFs (among other cool things).

Great site.  I hope more of this happens.

Anyways, I think the site is missing some essentials:

1) Winslow Homer, Veteran in a New Field - so much symbolism!

2) Winslow Homer, Sharpshooter, both the painting and print

3) Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Robert Shaw Memorial (aka the 54th colored regiment statue).

But great.

Yes, if I were to teach US again I would definitely teach the Civil War through art.

JG - yeah, I think those are great additions - that said, I think they were working exclusively with the collections available though those Chicago institutions hence the omissions.  When you're WHC article comes out be sure to post a cover photo and TOC and/or full or excerpts of your article - do share as that is the name of the game here!
