Wired Magazine only puts about 90% of their content on line. This little feature I pulled does not have a date I can find :( Still, despite the less than awesome scan, there is a lot of interesting stuff to talk with students about re: emoticons. I love the start of the timeline...

Cool. Thanks for posting this, Ryan. Researching visual literacy has confirmed that almost everything--even emoticons, it seems--is older than I thought it was! This article adds to what we're learning about visual texts.
