Making Curriculum Pop

I wanted to share a week-long camp I co-taught on Peaks Island, ME that paired local history with comics-making. It was a blast!

I looked over your blog entry; it's phenomenal!! The kids really worked hard and came up w/ some amazing work. How did this camp come about?? I'd be so thrilled to do something similar here in the Chicago area if that was do-able. If you want to contact me outside the Ning, feel free to "friend" me here on the Ning and we can get in touch! I have lots of Q's. :)
Kelly, it came about because I was on the Board of the Fifth Maine Museum, on the education committee, and considering ways to attract more kids to history. I also teach illustration at the college level and have a middle-school aged daughter, so the art part was inserted among the other outdoor activities and history tales that were researched by the education coordinator at the museum. It was our first time, and the kids really had fun.
I am kinda new to the ning. How do I friend you?
Jamie
This is so cool. I have already shared your blog with many of my colleagues in our History department. We've been so inspired by your camp that we are talking about doing something similar for students in our area. Perhaps a Liberal Arts Comics Camp? Although maybe LACC isn't the best acronym... Thanks!
Hmm, maybe some acronym that spells LAFF? Liberal Arts Fun Fest? Whatever you call it, history can be pretty cool when it's drawn, cooked, and roped. Thanks for writing!
