If you don't already know about my MAGAZINE site on the MEDIA LITERACY CLEARINGHOUSE web page, I hope you will take a look.  I think magazines (from home or school) are great tools for teaching both visual and media literacy, as well as informational texts. The ads in magazines also offer plenty of opportunities to engage students in these creative/persuasive messages.
