Making Curriculum Pop

In my workshops, I always include a cover from The New Yorker magazine because more than any other, its lack of texts (words) and the use of illustration to communicate ideas and concepts, makes it perfect for teaching visual literacy with students.  So here is another one--timed with news from the US Supreme Court. The magazine celebrated the SCOTUS historic rulings on gay marriage with one of its most awesome covers of all time. It marked the moment by featuring what many people consider to be one of the most famous gay couples in pop culture: Bert and Ernie (of Sesame Street fame).  This Huffpost feature includes a slideshow of other controversial magazine covers.

Wow! Great visual imagery. Thanks for reminding me about The New Yorker. It has been a long time since I have looked at their covers.
