In this professional development program for educators and youth media professionals, you will get an in-depth look at 10-week curriculum developed by Youth Radio in Oakland, California, which uses young men’s interest in sports culture to open up conversations about health, relationships and more.

Want to understand the history of black quarterbacks and what they mean to young men of color?
Discuss how media shapes the economics of college sports?
Consider how the many connection between the values of hip-hop, Scarface and professional sports can open up critical conversations about relationships, masculinity and power?
In this program, we’ll learn how talk about sports can be used to address health and lifestyle issues related to good decision-making. The video clips used in this program will get you talking, we promise!

You will also meet some Oakland youth who have participated in the program, producing audio commentaries for Youth Radio about controversial issues related to sports, identity, and values.

If you’re an educator who works with young men of color, you’ll come away from this program with lots of practical ideas about how to support meaningful conversations about sports and media in ways that build critical thinking and communication skills and support healthy behavior choices. If you’re a sports fan, you’ll deepen your appreciation of what you love best about sports and gain sensitivity to the many social issues that connect to sports culture.

PLAY BALL!

Also, join the youth media community for a night at the game on THURSDAY, September 17 at 7 p.m. We’ll watch the Phillies play the Washington Nationals! Register for this special event here.
