Killing Us Softly with Tough Guise
By Mike Gange
I am often asked to present at conferences. I love it. The traveling, seeing new sights, making new connections, gaining new perspectives.
At one conference, I was on a panel with Jean Kilborne, the author of Killing Us Softly. I had just reviewed her book, so meeting her was very cool. I was impressed by her ideas and by her in person.
At another conference, I sat beside Jackson Katz on the closing panel. Katz is the author of Tough Guise, a video about images of masculinity presented to us by the media.
Because of those chance meetings, and how impressed I was with both of those people, I use both of their videos in my media classes. I show Kilborne’s video one day, Katz’ video the next.

Use both of these films in my media and diversity class - always elicits great discussion although Tough Guise is getting increasingly difficult to show (due to its outdated pop culture references).
Thanks for saying so....I am going to take this further....a few more viewings to comment on....stay tuned!
Just saw Jean Kilbourne on a special from PBS about women. The message is still the same but it seems the fight has fizzled. Still relevant just not we're not as militant? Seems a shame!
