Making Curriculum Pop

I decided to change the order of the things I teach in my Media Studies class this year. I started with the usual opening lessons, talking about what is media studies and why it’s valuable. Then instead of going into a unit on television, I went into a unit on Film and Movies. I want my students to join me for Oscar Night, so I have invited them all to come to school on Sunday evening. I will have to pay for the pizza and pop, but the experience of us all watching the Academy Awards should be interesting and worthwhile. I am sure my investment will be worth the returns. 

 

Every time I can find something on the Oscars, the Academy Awards or the movies that are nominated for awards, I have brought them to class. We have had some interesting discussions.

 

Following the Grammy Awards, I asked the class to tell me how the Grammy Awards telecast was valuable. They pointed out that the Grammy organization received $20 Million from CBS for the rights to the telecast. They pointed out that CBS gained back about a million dollars a minute for all the commercials it aired. And they pointed out . . .
