Making Curriculum Pop

I am starting a new PLC at my school based on educating ourselves on the Common Core.

Our first book will be Pathways to the Common Core: Accelerating Achievement by Lucy Calkins, Mary Ehrenworth, and Christopher Lehman.
Do any of you having any suggestions for organization and/or questions I should begin with? Any tips/tricks? Any things to look out for?

The Understanding Language website, ell.standford.edu, has a number of papers about addressing the needs of English Language Learners in the area of the Common Core. All these papers would invite good PLC discussions. Also during the last week of November a middle school language arts unit will be posted. This is an exemplar unit on persuasion. It is meant to help teaches see the shifts required by the common core for English Learners. The introduction is quite good and will help teachers understand the shifts.
