Making Curriculum Pop

I'm teaching summer school to 6th graders going into 7th grade.  These are students who are recommended for the summer program because they need "extra academic intervention."

I currently teach high school and haven't had any experience with teaching any grade below 8th.

Any suggestions for high interest books we could read together as a class, in addition to a few suggestions that I could recommend for independent reading.

Any ideas would be extremely helpful.

Just taught my first year of seventh grade after doing my first two in a high school. Some suggestions:

The Misfits (our district's 6th into 7th grade summer reading)

Flipped (relationships at the Middle School Level)

Egghead

The Outsiders

Hunger Games (I know there's been some debate on here but out of 120 students I would say 40 chose this as an independent reading)

The Contender (a bit older - this one was hit or miss)

Beastly

Thank you, The misfits is on the summer reading list as well.  I just finished the Hunger Games...I think it would be a fun read for them as well.  I'll look into the other suggestions.

Definitely bring the graphic novels!! I recommend Rapunzel's Revenge and Calamity Jack by Hale and Hale, the Coraline GN illustrated by Russell, Into the Volcano by Wood, Flink and Ghostopolis by TenNapel, Prime Baby by Yang, the Maximum Ride GNs illustrated by Lee, the Abadazad books (like a bridge between a regular-text novel and a GN), and Amazing Greek Myths of Wonder and Blunders by Townsend. There are so many more, but these would be recommended as far as level (for kids needing a bit of reading help) and content.
