Making Curriculum Pop

Lots of folks from the NCTE Media Commission are on this Ning - pretty exciting announcement to share with people...drum roll....

NCTE Media Literacy Award Winner, 2009

The NCTE Commission on Media is proud to announce its fourth annual Media Literacy Award winner, Guofang Wan, Professor, Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.

A resolution passed by the members at the 2003 San Francisco Convention on Composing with Non-Print Media, made the creation of this award especially timely. The resolution recommended the encouragement of pre-service, in-service, and staff development programs that focus on new literacies, multi-media composition and a broadened concept of literacy. The award showcases NCTE members who have developed innovative approaches for integrating media analysis and composition into their instruction and is presented to an individual, team, or department that has implemented and refined exemplary media literacy practices in their school environment. The Award Selection Process is based on a portfolio review by a panel from the Commission on Media. See this link for more details: http://www.ncte.org/volunteer/groups/mediacomm/medialitaward

The presentation of the award will take place at the NCTE Annual Convention in Philadelphia during the Assembly on Media Arts Sharing Session on Saturday, November 21, 2009 from 5:45-7:00 p.m. During this time, Dr. Wan will receive a plaque and be asked to share a brief description of her work. We are pleased to announce that Dr. Wan will also receive a check for $2000 given on behalf of the Beck Foundation to use as a travel stipend to help defray her cost to attend the Annual Convention.

Statement from Guofang Wan
2009 NCTE Media Literacy Award Winner

Since the mid-1990s, media literacy has been the focus of my research and teaching efforts. I have published three books and a dozen of journal articles on media literacy education, and designed a number of curricula that have integrated media literacy education in schools and colleges. Addressing all media literacy principles -- access, analysis, evaluation, and creation of information, my efforts include research publication, curriculum development, collaboration with community members and media producers, mentoring teachers and graduate students, as well as advocacy of media literacy locally, nationally, and internationally.

Currently, I am a professor at College of Education, Ohio University working with both undergraduate and graduate students majoring in teacher education. Prior to this, I taught at Department of Teacher Education, Bradley University for several years. Media literacy is a topic addressed in various language arts method courses and general secondary method courses that I teach. My students learn about the theory of media literacy and practice it through hands on activities.
