Ryan, These excellent pieces reflect the turmoil in teaching today. How do we move readers towards a media awareness/media literacy so they can continue to consume but also become "sophisticated citizens?" It's a problem in our journalism classes, as we get kids to write about their "hyper-local" school environment. It's a problem in our media classes, as kids don't have stuff to model their work on. And it's a problem in our media products. Media products, you say? What was the last show you saw on TV that was about media? The Gary Shandling Show, which lampooned Johnny Carsons show? Twenty years ago. WKRP? That was the 80's. Lou Grant? Mary Tyler Moore? the 70's. Where do kids get their info on media? From the media they consume. But the media is reluctant to turn the light on itself. There is a lack of information on the media that is changing the way we interact, communicate and share our voices. Thanks for this article. -- Mike
Glad you liked the article - for me, as much as I love a great narrative it made me think of the power of student centered teaching instead of lecturing - I'm very interested to see how the model develops and hope to follow this story. Interesting stuff, eh?
