Making Curriculum Pop

Caught this one at the pretty cool eLearning Blog by David Hopkins.

This cartoon does apply to k-12 classrooms where teachers stick with the dreaded row format. Obviously, our college lecture halls aren't going to be rebuilt anytime soon so I'd imagine this cartoon will be relevant for at least another 100 years!

This made me laugh. And then I got confused because I can't figure out which one I am....

However, I think the type of work surface makes more of a difference than the format. For instance, two-person tables situated in rows allow students to work with partners but also give them personal space. When it comes to groupwork, it is a simple matter of turning around to face the pair behind you. I know for me at least it always drove me nuts to have to have my back to the front of the classroom when desks were placed in groups. And I've always hated individual desks, because they aren't big enough.
Cassie, thanks for writing. I'm with you - I can't stand desks. Imagine how many of our students don't like them either. I'm also a big fan of the two person "lab table" - they are much more spacious and versatile :)
