"It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one destiny, affects all indirectly.” —Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Christmas Eve sermon, 1967. #MLKDay

Ryan, thanks for the post: this is a wonderful echo of John Donne's "Meditation 17" sentiment: "No man is an island....every man's death diminishes me because I am part of mankind." I'm usually teaching Donne to my junior Brit. Lit. students around MLKDay, and his sermon pairs perfectly.
On Sept. 12, 2001, I remember actor Gary Sinise reciting "Meditation 17" at a memorial gathering the day after the 9/11 tragedy at the Daley Center in Chicago...it was so perfect and so powerful! I wish I could find a video of that recitation to share with students to bring another contemporary connection to Donne's ideas.
