A Teachable Moment: Turning News from Egypt into Classroom Lessons

Students as young as elementary school are capable of understanding the current uprising in Egypt, says school-improvement coach Elena Aguilar. She encourages teachers to engage students in higher-order thinking on the topic. She suggests talking to students about the issues of freedom and speech, and relating the current events to historical ones they already are familiar with, such as the civil rights movement.
