Hey Julianna,

My scanner was on the fritz but I fixed it today. When we last talked I happened to come across this image that I saved from an NYC paper last year. Just like the Rodney King stuff, this further complicates how we culturally define a "hero." Maybe you'll find the JPEG useful for discussion.

Also be sure to consider joining those ELA groups, we'd love to add you to the discussions there!

Hey Julianna,

Thanks for writing - Jane is my homegirl!

Well I guess my question to you is a hero in what context? Are you doing Homer or more modern heroes?

The PDF that goes with the CD is here
http://mindblue.com/benhome.html

I would say "Like A King" is a song that in many ways asks the question "Who is a hero?" as it compares Rodney King to MLK - and by no means does it assume that Rodney is a hero, but he is something - the material leading up to the song in the PDF carefully lays out the case for and against King. You can always show the footage of the beating at the beginning of Malcolm X or online but this song really complicates the issue of what a hero is.

"Glory and Consequence" is a wonderful song because it is so simple (what I call a Rorschach song) that it can be applied to any situation where someone is attempting a heroic act.

"Fight for your Mind" could be read as a heroic song - what does it mean to fight for your Mind? "Excuse Me. Mister" questions people in power. Again depending on what your teaching with these could be helpful.

Additionally, Ben covers a Maya Angelou poem "And Still I Rise" (written about in the PDF but not on the CD but available here) That really talks about persevering in the face of adversity.

You can also check a companion lesson to this with female rappers here (Lesson 34)
http://www.rockhall.com/teacher/sti-lesson-plans/

I think you can really find "heroic journey's EVERYWHERE - was Ted Kennedy a hero or tragic hero, was MJ a tragic hero?

Have you seen the TV show Heroes? Kids are into that and the comic/film The Watchmen or better yet The Incredibles complicates the issue of a superhero.

Again, depending on what your unit is about you can find a ton of great films that can relate to a definition of hero at the Media That Matters film festival (online)
http://www.mediathatmattersfest.org/

You can also teach a song like John Lennon's "Working Class Hero" and link it with a great TAL (This American Life) radio story like Act 1 of Backed Into A Corner "Working Class Hero Sandwich" - episode here.

See the thematic links at the bottom right hand corner of the page.

If you let me know what your doing specifically I could probably give you more pinpoint suggestions. We could also do a post in a specific group (see http://mcpopmb.ning.com/groups) based on how your teaching the topic and get ideas from some of the 700+ people out here on the Ning.

Hope this gets you started!

Stay Groovy,

Ryan
