QUESTION: Quote about Learning and what is left over?

OK, So I remember hearing a famous quote that was something like:

"Learning is what you remember" or

"What's left over is learning" or

"The residue of education is learning" or

"Only what you remember is learning"

Does anyone know what I'm talking about, who or where this quote might be coming from? I want to use it to start an article and can't for the life of me figure out where this is from / the exact quote.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Ry:)

Actually, web research attributes the quote to all three:  Conant, Skinner, and Einstein.  Conant probably preceded Skinner and John Golden's source below is correct (according to the Yale Book of Quotations, a delightful read).

Hi Everyone - if people aren't following the discussion (button below) you might not get this response BUT thank you all so much - talk about the crowd being smarter than one person!

I'm certainly thinking it was Skinner...

"Education is what survives when what has been learned has been forgotten."

"Learning is what remains when that which is taught is forgotten."

The challange here is this Conant fellow might have proceeded Skinner, eh? But yes, this is the quote - thank you all for your help! Now to find the right source.

So I'm sure you never meant to get into this, but what about great quotes for "education?"

“Education is not filling a bucket, but lighting a fire.” -William Butler Yeats

The one I found most like what you're looking for was the same Skinner quote Phyllis provided but with the word "education" instead of "learning"--

Education is what survives when what has been learned has been forgotten.
B. F. Skinner
My source is is the Brainy Quote (r) web site.

A quick answer:  "Learning is what remains when that which is taught is forgotten."   BF Skinner.  Looking for the source of the Skinner quote

Maybe one of these: "Education is what remains after one has forgotten everything he learned in school." Albert Einstein

or Learning is what you remember after you've forgotten all you've heard .  ??

Education is what is left after all that has been learnt is forgotten.

Ha, I think it might be:

"Attribution is whom we think we remember saying something we can't quite put our (figurative) finger on."

Ryan, I just want to point out that you can recall neither the quote nor the person who said it, BUT IT'S STILL THERE IN YOUR HEAD, and that's exactly what this (non-)quote seems to be saying!  Good ol' Human Brain does it again!
