Hills Like Elephants by Hemingway and The Red Convertible by Louise Erditch work very well for my classes just to name a few.
I'm assuming (as this is the Brit Lit group) you're looking for British stories. If so I don't remember the book super well but Irvine Welsh is a wild writer (Trainspotting the movie was based on his book) - he has a short story collection The Acid House that has to have a short, high-interest and at least one classroom friendly story.
