I challenged my students to look at the strengths and weaknesses of the Hollywood Blockbuster mentality.

Peter, just a few questions for you...

 of the 700 films released by Hollywood last year, how many were Indies?

how many Indie films recieved nominations for Oscars, or won Oscars? pick a year.

In a downturned ecomony, are investors more likely to invest in an Indie film, or a almost-guaranteed rate of return on investment?

why are so many big budget movies opting for paid product placement?

 

I think there are some fine movies being made in present day Hollywood, and I don't have a solution as to how one might get more voices heard in the movie making business, but there are clearly some not so nice aspects to the present economic model that promotes movie making only through six studios.

 

 

Peter, I am sure you are missing my point. And I was always of the belief that media literacy promoted sharing of ideas, not attacks on intelligence or job descriptions. Thanks for your kind words.
