Abrams has put online, for free, the Reading Guide I developed for Art Spiegelman and Francoise Mouly's TOON Treasury of Classic Children's Comics. If you're not familiar with this book, it collects landmark work by Carl Barks, Walt Kelly, John Stanley, Basil Wolverton, and many, many others.
For that reason, this guide may be useful to you even if you don't own the book for it's possible to apply some of the teaching strategies to any number of graphic texts. The focus, by the way, is on literacy and reading skills: making inferences/predictions, text types, voice, vocabulary, cause-and-effect, slang/dialect, etc., etc.
