If your students liked Twilight, what else would you recommend? This is a question that was asked on an NCTE listserve I'm on..

I tried to read this series but young studnets seem to love this manga Chibi Vampire from Tokyo Pop. The first couple comics were all PG. I can't vouch for all 14 volumes.

I wonder if Anne Rice's vampire series might be good. Interview with a Vampire is the first. There are several in the series, some good, some not so good, but the first few are great.

Lorraine, thanks for sharing. I must say, I don't remember how "sexy" those novels were. Do you? That might be the issue, but all this vampire stuff is about that isn't it. Good thing they don't always ban subtext. :)

Ryan, it has been awhile, and it is possible they are too sexy. There is a kind of homoerotic subtext, as I recall. But nothing blantantly homosexual. I know that my younger son read the first one when he was about 14, but I have to admit that once my children turned about twelve, I let them read what they wanted. And I teach at a private school where the director is profoundly anti-censorship. Lucky me!

Yeah, I've always been in those kind of schools and had the same type of parents. If only it were always so simple!

A lot of my students have loved A Great and Terrible Beauty. It doesn't have vampires, but it's got a similar feel because it involves the supernatural. The protagonist is a much stronger woman than Bella Swan. It's a great series!
