Making Curriculum Pop

Making Atoms Pop?

Hello, I am Virginia Platt and I am a secondary education student with an emphasis on biology.  I
believe that my placement will be at the same place that I did my methods, an 8th grade science class, and at that time the students will be covering the chemistry unit on atoms.  I remember what
a hard time the last students had on the quizzes and tests that covered the atoms and their structure and would like to concentrate on creating a unit will help overcome this problem.

By the end of the unit I would like the students to be able to…

Readily identify the structure of an atom.

Be familiar with the history of the atom’s scientific discovery.

Understand the different structures of the atom and their properties.

Relate the atomic structure of the atom to different elements in the periodic table

Here are some resources I’ve found already

This is an interactive periodic table of elements

Here is a children's book creation Activity

A comparison activity, which compares the atomic structure in 1898 vs today atomic
structure

A website with many different atom activities

Another website with different interactive games, and activities

Make sure you check this older post BOOK+RESOURCES: The Elements + Periodic Table loaded with resources on this topic AND you might check out the MIT's Lego Chemistry Tools.
