I don't know of any articles, but my school began using logins this year in order to avoid "accidental" deleting of student files on a shared drive. Now each student has his/her own space for files with a drop to teacher and retrieve subfolders. Seems to be working well.
I don't know about articles either, but why wouldn't you have individual log ins?? With log ins, you keep student work private, can tell who is doing things they should not be doing, and it just makes sense. I can't imagine allowing my kids on computers without any way to keep them responsible.
