Making Curriculum Pop

There are two videos, funny as anything, about long division shenanigans.

I was showing them to a student, who believed them at first. Then I asked him to model it in counters, and make a stop-motion animation out of it. When he came back, his comment was, "It's hard to make wrong math work with counters."

Exactly!

The larger math question is: "WHY is it wrong?" The "Costello method" appears on surface to work perfectly fine. as teachers we should get students to be able to articulate (1) Costello's method mathematically speaking and (2) what the problem with it is - again mathematically speaking.

Hint: Costello is messing around with place value.
