Making Curriculum Pop

Greetings group. My name is Tony and I am a Lecturer in English at
Northeastern State University at Tahlequah, Oklahoma. I'm in the process
of developing the very first course ever presented by our department on
the Literature of the Graphic Word. It's going to be a summer course (8
weeks) and will include an introduction to Lit Theory, Comics Theory,
Storytelling, Comics as Discourse, and Comics as Remediation for ESL
Students. I've got a list of works to use, most are the "usual
suspects," and I'm searching for lesson plans created using Will
Eisner's Contract with God and The Plot. Any suggestions? Thanks for
allowing me to participate.

Tony, when I was at NCTE I was able to pick up this INCREDIBLE CD ROM - Rationales for Teaching Graphic Novels - that includes lessons and resources for 108 graphic novels. One of the included GN's was The Plot - I'm attaching the PDF from the CD ROM below "for educational purposes only" - I'd like to thin that I'm actually doing PR for the impressive CD rom by sharing. That said, you might want to support JBC and Katie's work and consider picking up ....

Thanks, Ryan. I wish I had the budget to go to the conferences. I'll see if I can get the books through interlibrary loan and check them out. Is the CD available from the NCTE website? That's my next professional organization to join...have to space them out over the academic year so they're not all due at the same time, lol. We all know how that one goes, right?

Again, thanks bunches and when this downloads I'll be sure to print and store it with my other lesson plans.
Tony, actually the CD Rom (hyperlinked above) is published by Maupin House not NCTE. James and Katie are here on the site so I just don't want them to think I'm giving their excellent tools away sans at least a sales pitch :) They are a great college resource even though they have a secondary focus.

Yeah, we'll also crowdsource this Tuesday and see if anyone else has other cool resources! It is great to have you in the mix!
Hey Tony,
I will post some lessons at my website, http://www.graphicnovelsandhighschoolenglish.com for you on the Eisner group page. I just finished teaching Eisner's ACWG and A Life Force and my seniors are just finishing up writing papers on both. I also have some "homemade SparkNotes" on both novels I can post. I also did some grad work on Eisner, so I will see what else I can find!

Hey, yourself, Maureen. Thanks for the response. I can't get your link to come up but I'll try again when I get on campus later today. I'm looking forward to seeing what you've got in your lesson plans.

Tony
I have posted a few things on my site for you.
Hi, Tony:
This isn't a lesson plan, but there is a new Will Eisner biography out. I just reviewed it for the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

Hope it helps!

Good article, Bill. I remember reading the original Spirit newspaper strips at my grandparents because they kept newspapers "because you never know..." Great start for a young mind. I'll have to get a copy of the book.
