VIDEOS: Personal Fav - Get Kids Excited about STEM - Norwegian Style

I caught these videos/commercials two years ago on TBS's great annual TV show World's Funniest Commercials. They were created by a Norwegian engineering company Hydro to get kids excited about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers.

Having visited Norway (my grandma was born there) you'll routinely see wild feats of engineering as the country has to deal with the crazy mountainous terrain/ fjords that looks something like this almost everywhere:

The fact that such a small country (only about 4.5 million people) has enough money and engineering moxie to put roads in the places like you see above is slightly mind-blowing.

The thing I love about these commercials is not just that they're really funny - but, through exaggeration, they illuminate the seemingly magical things math, science and engineering does for us on a daily basis. I think a lot of kids, and adults take the power of science, math and technology for granted. By making the seemingly ordinary extraordinary I think these clips put the powers of STEM in relief so we can all think about the invisible technologies that surround us.

Enjoy the clips!

The top video wouldn't work. But the botto video did. LOVED!! Reminded me of the very old movie, Goonies. Not sure why, there was no relation.
Oh yeah, it vanished, found it again and put the video back in. Yes very Goonies!
LOVE the hydro vidoes!

Here are a few of my keepers, some of which I've used during media literacy units with high school students.
