At the risk of being politically incorrect, praying. :) Actually, I am force feeding essays. We write on one day and peer edit the next. I find that the students hear one another because of the respect that is within the classroom. I am also working diligently on MC vocabulary.
What's your best suggestion for MC vocabulary? This is one of the biggest problems I see; the students don't understand the words in the stems. Thanks.

Yes. I spent time at the beginning of the year just going over and over those stem words as well as words in the answers. Before I gave a MC practice, I would put the words in the stems and answers on the board and they were to add those to their vocabulary pages. After the first nine weeks, I stopped that, but allowed them to use the vocabulary pages for the practice. Then just before Christmas, I stopped all of that and they have been more successful on the MC tests than in previous years at this time.
