As many of you know, I'm a huge fan of Ira Glass's radio show from WBEZ Chicago - "This American Life". I can't think of any program or writing across ALL media that is as consistently interesting, insightful or entertaining . Whenever Nicole and I go on long road trips we download a bunch of TAL's for the ride - yesterday during our drive West we listened to Episode 358: Social Engineering. Each episode is built around a theme - from there each "act" tells a different story related to that theme.
The prologue, Act 1, and Act II of this episode are fascinating but Act III is absolutely devastating. As a teacher this you can't help but empathize with this parent's story. While you wouldn't teach your elementary kids with this story, you might use it as a case study for teacher training or professional development.
The Act III Summary: When Amy Silverman's daughter was born with Down syndrome, she followed the advice of all the parents she met: she signed her daughter up for "early intervention" therapy. But her daughter's progress had unexpected consequences, forcing Amy to make a choice she'd never predicted. (9 minutes)
