Hello everyone,
This spring I am coordinating a conference at Juniata College on using comics in the classroom. Below is the call for papers. Please consider presenting or just attending! If you have colleagues using comics (in any discipline) please pass this information along.
Best regards,
Jay Hosler
Call for Papers:
Sequential SmArt: Teaching With Comics
Sequential SmArt is a conference that will bring together creators of comics and graphic books, scholars and teachers from a range of disciplines who teach using comics, and an audience of educators who work with students from early childhood to the college level. The conference will be held May 18-19, 2012, at Juniata College in beautiful Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.
Keynote addresses will be given by Matt Madden (author of Drawing Words and Writing Pictures and co-editor of The Best American Comics) and by Eric Shanower (author of Age of Bronze, two-time winner of the Eisner Award—the Oscars for comics and graphic books—as Best Writer-Artist).
We invite proposals for twenty-minute presentations on topics such as:
· Innovative ways in which comics can help explain topic in all sorts of disciplines, including the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities;
· How creating comics can teach writing and foster literacy;
· How specific comics can address state educational standards;
· How the analysis of comics can reveal themes and patterns that illustrate a society and culture at a particular time;
· Linking research in the scholarship of teaching and learning to the use of comics in the classroom.
Proposals are due January 4, 2012. Please submit a presentation abstract (150 words max) and a résumé or c.v. to Dr. David Hsiung hsiung@juniata.edu. All questions about proposals should be directed to Dr. Hsiung at the above email address.
To stay up to date on conference announcements please join us on the Sequential SmArt Facebook page.

This is great, Jay. Thanks for posting and hosting! I'm forwarding this to my students - who are all working on projects on using comics in their classroom. V. Cool. Best, Nick
Hi, Jay! I've forwarded this to my PA teacher friends.
Thanks, Gareth! I'm anxious to see the response. Do you know of anyone using your work in classes?
Well, my books are an easy fit, so yes, I know many, many teachers using them. I was just in PA a few weeks ago for the PCTELA annual conference, and sold all the books I brought with me.
I hope one of them submits something. I think many of the teachers would be interested to hear their approach (I certainly would). And I just noticed that you supply a teachers guide. That is a brilliant thing to have available.
Thanks! I made the one for King Lear myself, and then Candlewick did official ones for Beowulf and The Odyssey.
Cool, Jay. I'll submit a proposal. I'm presenting a workshop at the IRA Annual Convention in early May, so I'd be willing to do a 20-minute version!
Love to see the educational comics conferences happening! Mike Gianfrancesco and I are still searching for a hosting institution to repeat the NECAC next fall.
