Occasionally, in place of a regular lesson plan, we provide a collection of resources for teaching about a timely topic. In recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, here is a collection of New York Times, Learning Network and other materials for teaching and learning about Dr. King, the civil rights movement he led and his legacy.

Ryan,
What a fantastic collection of resources you have gathered for us! Thank you. We have done a variety of things to celebrate Black History Month in our school. The school announcements were turned over to interested African American students for reporting the school news. Even students who didn't have speech class showed up to help out. We decorated their back drop with African cloths, masks, and for our moment of silence, the camera panned to Dr. MLK jr. We held a special assembly in the cafeteria with a local judge speaking about her upbringing, a principal, and then a variety of poems read by students on stage. The pinnacle of all was a rendition of MLK jr's "I Have a Dream" speech by a staff member. It boomed through the cafeteria and brought tears to peoples' eyes. (He had memorized it!) We played the "I have a dream" song as students entered and exited. For our school, it reminded us that every month is a celebration of the diversity we have on our campus.
