Making Curriculum Pop

This week I had the occasion to revisit an INCREDIBLE Akira Kurosawa film called Ikiru (1952). After viewing that film I re-read some Kurosowa info I hadn't read in years.

Most folks know that Kurosawa's films inspired many famous Hollywood Movies:

The Hidden Fortress (1958) = Star Wars (1977)
The Seven Samurai (1954) = The Magnificent Seven (1960)
Yojimbo (1961) = A Fistful of Dollars (1964)

But Kurosawa himself was big into doing adaptations of Shakespeare...

Most English teacehers know that his film Throne of Blood (1957) = Macbeth set in medieval Japan.

A lot of us know that Ran (1985) is a retelling of King Lear set in medieval Japa

But the one I didn't know about was that The Bad Sleep Well (1960) is a modern variation on Hamlet.

Go figure, that was one of my interesting discoveries this week. Just like the old post - FILM: Global A Go-Go with The Bard - I love finding out about undercover Shakespeare adaptations. Has my life come to this? :)
