Subj: Mini-Grant Opportunities for News Literacy Education!
I am emailing you today about an opportunity to apply for a mini-grant in the amount of $5,000. This grant is given through a partnership between The Center for News Literacy and the Robert R. McCormick Foundation. The monetary grant is intended for teachers to introduce curriculum that builds critical literacy skills at the college level with regard to news and information.  This is what we call “News Literacy.”

News Literacy is the ability to use critical thinking skills to judge the reliability and credibility of news reports and information sources. It enables citizens to become smarter consumers and creators of fact-based information. It helps them develop informed perspectives and the navigational skills to become effective citizens in a digitally connected society.

News Literacy can overlap with other instructional theories, including Digital Literacy, Information Literacy and Media Literacy. Each occupies and promotes different skills sets at the intersection of digital media and critical thinking. This curriculum can also be adapted to social studies and civic education programs, English and Language Arts classes and any other subject area that requires the vetting of news and information to build critical literacy skills.

Examples of news literacy curriculum can be found here.

If you are interested in applying for this grant, you can go to this link for the application. It should take no longer than 30 minutes to fill out.  The deadline for applications is February 1, 2014.

If you have any questions pertaining to the Center for News Literacy and/or the grant, please feel free to contact the Staff Assistant to The Center for News Literacy, Liz Farley, at elizabeth.farley@stonybrook.edu or call us at 631-632-7637.
