BFI Southbank, London
Skins
Introduction
Essential for all Film and Media Studies teachers, and now Creative and Media Diploma teachers, this three-day professional development INSET offers a mix of workshops, presentations, panel discussions and seminars, allowing you to construct your own unique route through the programme.
Whether you're an NQT or a teacher of many years' experience, there are sessions to meet your own particular needs and interests. The programme is designed to be flexible to enable each participant to construct their own route through the event, taking into account particular needs, knowledge gaps, levels of professional experience and the demands of the specification taught. There will also be opportunities to explore the BFI Southbank venue with its Mediatheque, Gallery and Filmstore.
Plenary sessions
On Wednesday, our opening plenary will be presented by Christine Geraghty, Professor of Film and Television Studies at the University of Glasgow, who will look at the changes taking place in film adaptations of major novels. On Thursday, we present two plenary sessions, the first with renowned Journalist, Broadcaster and 'face of Channel 4 News', Jon Snow. In the afternoon, we welcome Peter Fincham, ITV's Director of Programmes, who will discuss the place of ITV in the converged media age. We close the conference on Friday afternoon with a Q&A with a surprise speaker from the film industry, followed by a screening of a new film.
The programme is designed for flexibility so that you can pass on the Inside Industry and Strand Four options in order to attend the Teacher-led sessions. Alternatively you can make more varied selections depending on your experience and needs.
In addition there are three conference strands:
Teacher-led sessions
These Teacher-led workshops give teachers the opportunity to share teaching approaches around a particular topic or curriculum area. Informal slots, they are supported with documentation, including worksheets, bibliographies and resource information.
Inside Industry sessions
Inside Industry sessions give teachers informal access to a range of media professionals and an opportunity to quiz them about their work, giving a view from inside, for instance, documentary filmmaking, television script-writing, British TV Drama and film marketing. After a brief introduction from the speaker, there will be plenty of time for an informal Q&A session.
Strand Four
Strand Four gives teachers the opportunity to keep abreast of some recent film and television academic research in a seminar context. The selection this year includes everything from an examination of the resurgence of 3D film, the impact of the internet on PSB and the 'War on Terror' as depicted on British Television.
