Making Curriculum Pop

At the end of second semester of Global Connections (freshman world history) there is a unit on current global issues. Within this unit, the students explore changing population sizes and the problems associated with these changes in three countries that are examined in the first hour of the Nova documentary World in the Balance.

Students focus on these essential questions:

1. What effect do humans have on the natural resources available in their environment?
2. What problems do different nations face with their changing population demographics?

After exploring population pyramids, students view the documentary using media guides. By giving the students the focus of just one of the three countries explored in the video, they can direct their energy during the viewing. Students convene in base groups and then work in jigsaw groups to complete a 3 for thinking activity in order to give their discussion a starting point. A RAFT activity is the final assessment for students to complete individually.

Upon completion of the unit students will be able to:

11  1. Students will be able to understand the meaning of the shapes of various population pyramids.

2. Students will compare & contrast characteristics of, birth rates, & standards of living in developing and industrialized countries.
3. Students will identify factors that impact fertility & mortality rates.
4. Students will compare & contrast fertility & mortality rates in India, Japan & Kenya.
5. Students will state the effects of the population on the economy, medical systems, natural resources and governments of the respective countries.
6. Students will develop realistic solutions to the problems presented in the video.

The attached lesson plan uses differentiated activities to tap into multiple intelligences, learning styles and various written expression capabilities. Included are a timeline of activities and sample artifacts developed.
