Making Curriculum Pop

Hello all -

I have a few students, grades 3-5, who are interested in using their reading time to keep their first language strong. I kinda had a handle on Spanish books for teens, but the 7 - 11 age group is new to me. Their reading levels in Spanish are 1st to 4th grade.

Any suggestions?  I am open to Spanish only or bilingual comics, traditional novels and books, websites of fiction and non fiction.... Anything! Especially easily accessible and free. :)

Much appreciated!

Hi, Joan.

I found this link from SpanglishBaby, and it seems to be pretty helpful. One of the better links is to America Reads Spanish, where they have an essential guide to Spanish books for children and young adults.

Take a look at the International Children's Digital Library for some free books. The search feature is hard to find- if you click on "read books", you can scroll to the bottom, type in Spanish, and it will bring up all the Spanish language books (if you choose Spanish from the drop-down menu at the top, it will only change the language of the page to Spanish!).

We have Spanish language copies of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid and some of the Captain Underpants books in our library, as well as several non-fiction books. The former librarian ordered them from a book jobber (a swell guy who brings me thousands of books to preview).

I hope this helps!

Thanks for the quick and resourceful reply, Mindi!  Both the list and the ebook site look great.

I have a subscription to Reading A-Z and many of the books I use as an ESOL teacher for guided reading in English are also available in Spanish and French.  I make it a practice to send the Spanish version home with the kids to read with their parents in addition to reading the English version to them.  I really love this!

Hope this helps!

Oh, I have access to raz kids, too but I haven't used it, yet. I didn't realize they had Spanish versions. I will get that set up right away.

Thanks!

Bummer, Raz Kids and Reading A-Z are different subscriptions. Back on the hunt...

Don't know if you do Scholastic Book Orders or not, but they have Clue Leo, which has many affordable options for Spanish language books that are current.  I assume if you have a few students in this category, it is safe to say that there will be more so it could be a good educational investment.  Also, they could have the option of purchasing their own affordable books.

Something to look into. Thanks!
