I caught this article on concussions in this month's Chicago Magazine...
Also reminded me of an excellent Frontline documentary Football High a parent hipped me to:
They have also teamed up with ESPN to track concussions during the NFL season at this PBS site...
Also of note ths old science post from Frank Baker Topic 'CURRICULUM: Science and Pro Football NFL + NBC' and my fav. article on Football culture by Malcolm Gladwell from the New Yorker OFFENSIVE PLAY How different are dogfighting and football?

Thanks, Ryan. Concussions are a such a big deal these days, particularly in football. One young adult novel that I particularly enjoy is Knights of the Hill Country by Tim Tharp. In one of several subplots, the main character is forced to consider his own safety while also considering the importance of being a "team player." I have not read Open Ice by Pat Hughes, but I know it focuses on the issue of concussions in the sport of hockey.
Here are a few resources I have referred to lately on the topic of CTE and concussions. This from a previous post on my blog:
Here is a really good article on the potential effects of football on the brain. CTE is scary stuff, and I understand why people would not want their children playing a game that has the potential of significantly decreasing their life expectancy. http://es.pn/YALconcussions

Alan, great add-ons! Hopefully we can get some more people in this group over time. Also, assuming I'm able to broadcast more soon - consider cross posting your blogs here in this group and I will highlight them on Monday's Blog and Cog's to the whole membership. The guy who does this best is Stergious - he posts reviews at his blog - http://graphicnovelresources.blogspot.com and then floods the GN and Comics discussion forum with mirror versions of the blog.
Happy New Year!
Ry:)
