Making Curriculum Pop

While at San Diego Comic Con, I attended the Comic Arts Conference track of programming. This year the guest of honor was David Lloyd. David is currently involved with a great initiative in the UK called the Cartoon Classroom.(its the correct link now) I highly recommend you take a look at what they are doing.

I also recently had a great conversation with the Co-CEO of Archie Comics about their Comic Book Fairs and their educational initiatives. Their site has links to some great pieces on the benefits of comics in the classroom that are really administrator friendly.

KellyAnn, I'm interested to follow up on this but the link to Comics Classroom won't work for me.

Thanks for sharing!

Yep, had it all wrong... should be more careful what links i'm copying. It's The Cartoon Classroom and it is www.cartoonclassroom.co.uk. Sorry about that.

Thanks, KellyAnn, I found the same link issue that Susan did. But that led me to this: http://comicsintheclassroom.net/, which is not the site you meant, but looks of use, and then this one - which i assume is the right one: http://cartoonclassroom.co.uk/home/. Adding both of these to the wiki i'm setting up for the course i'm teaching at Teachers College, Columbia U, in the fall: www.comicsclassroom.wikispaces.com. best, Nick

Nick,

Thanks for putting up the accurate site for Susan. David is really excited about this initiative and i should have been more careful with my links.

Thanks to you both! I love the way comics/cartoons involve kids in so much creative thinking and literacy skills, and often post about them on The Book Chook, especially the great online comic makers that make it easy for us non-artists to dabble.

There's alot of research being done in the states on the literacy angle. We need to be doing more with the creative thinking side of things. Which is part of why we launched www.popgoestheclassroom.com

I very much like the idea of using pop culture to engage kids, KellyAnn. Added a suggestion on your Resources page.
