What 5 essential pop culture artifacts (CDs, DVDs, Books, Images, Toys, etc.) would you have on your desert island?
I know the urge to load up an iPod is almost insurmountable, but we're going to try and party on this desert island like it's 1999. I think later on, I'll make it five artifacts in each genre, but for today these are my 5 essentials:

MUSIC: Jeff Buckley, Grace - Stevie Wonder Songs In the Key of Life, John Coltrane, A Love Supreme
FILM: The Royal Tenenbaums, Sweet & Lowdown, Clockers
BOOK: Another Country - James Baldwin

QUESTION: Quote about Learning and what is left over?

OK, So I remember hearing a famous quote that was something like:

"Learning is what you remember" or

"What's left over is learning" or

"The residue of education is learning" or

"Only what you remember is learning"

Does anyone know what I'm talking about, who or where this quote might be coming from? I want to use it to start an article and can't for the life of me figure out where this is from / the exact quote.

Thanks in advance… Continue

QUESTION: Favorite quotes about metacognition (thinking about thinking)

Hi Everyone,

I'm wondering who people like to reference when talking with teachers about metacognition - the importance of students (and us teachers) thinking about what we're thinking.
The Institute for Habits of Mind has a great collection of quotes about metacognition.* I'm more interested in quotes from people like Vygotsky, Dewey, psychologists, researchers and academics, as it applies to teaching…

Hey, Ryan! It's good to see you back in the game! And congratulations on your doctorate!!! I just started a PhD program (Literacy/TESOL with St. John's U in Queens) in the spring semester, so I would LOVE to hear more about your program and your dissertation. -Jo Hawke

Thanks Ryan. Just wrote a book on bullying with my two teenage sons. We plan to do others, so it's always interesting to hear what folks think is missing from the world of kids' lit. Take a look if you get a chance: http://jerrycraft.net/offenders.html

Thank you,

Thanks for the group recommendations Ryan! I joined the site in one of my 'scouring the internet for a certain resource' journeys and never got around to really exploring it. But I joined the group and will make a note to explore this place more soon :)

Hello-

I hope you are doing well. Are you still a part of Ditrict 201 initiatives? There has been a lot of change in the short amount of time I have been here. Take care.
