Making Curriculum Pop

If your students liked Twilight, what else would you recommend? This is a question that was asked on an NCTE listserve I'm on..

The exchange went like this...

***QUESTION****FROM: carriefeist@yahoo.com

I have quite a few students who are finishing the Twilight series and looking for another good book or series like that. Does anyone have any suggestions? Twilight caught on with our boys, too. :)

Thanks,

caf

**** RESPONSE ****FROM: well it is unclear but anyway..

Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, Book 1) (Paperback)by Richelle Mead
Marked by P.C. Cast
• Wicked Lovely by M. Marr
• Evermore by A. Noel
City of Bones by C. Clare
Ironside by H. Black
Uglies by S. Wetserfield

Of course, as you read these, don't forget to take a hot minute to read the post: ESSENTIAL READING: The Gossip Mill: Alloy, The Teen Entertainment F...

I tried to read this series but young studnets seem to love this manga Chibi Vampire from Tokyo Pop. The first couple comics were all PG. I can't vouch for all 14 volumes.

What books do you recommend to young readers who loved the Twilight series? Please share your ideas below! Try to add hyperlinks to Amazon if you have a minute as that makes is easier for folks to preview the texts!

Shiver by Maggie Stievatar, Bluebloods by Melissa de la Cruz and Tantalize by Cynthia Leitich-Smith are a couple more possibilities as well.
Katrina - Thanks for sharing those ideas!! Keep 'em coming!
Hi all,

I edit the New York Times Learning Network blog (http://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/), and we put up a "fill-in" activity off an article on "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart. Lots of teachers have written in to tell us their kids loved it: http://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/11/17/new-moon-fill-in/

Thanks!

Katherine thanks for sharing your blog! Peeps should also link to your blog, "Did You See ‘New Moon’ Over the Weekend?" The Learning Network is a great forum for 13 and older students to share their thoughts in a public forum!
Ack, I'm almost scared to ask for more since the Twilighters ("Twerds"?) innundated us, but if you have some super passionate fans, have them write in...we had to delete a lot of less-than-civil haters, though.
Is that funny or terrifying ? :)
Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith is another great series very similar to Twilight. They also made a TV series based on the novels on the CW.
Cory, are you a CW superfan :) Thanks for sharing ! Ry:)
While not a vampire book, all the kids who loved Twilight have loved The Hunger Games (and they all also have loved Harry Potter, but that doesn't help as they've already read them)
another book they've loved is 13 reasons why.

But to steer them to books that they think they'll like as they have a vampire theme, I've had kids like
Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side, Blue Bloods, Night Runnder, Vampire Kisses, the PC Csat and Kristin Cast books, and The Van Alen Legacy.

The Summoning (kids with various cool powers) is also popular.
Janet - thanks for sharing those suggestions!!!

Ryan:)
I just finished Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. It is not a vampire story but has many of the same elements of Twilight - star-crossed lovers, supernatural happenings, and characters that aren't what they seem to be. I enjoyed it and will recommend it to our 7th and 8th graders .
Cool debbie - Thanks for sharing your ideas!!
