This group is a wonderful idea.
Like all of you, I am sure, my challenges in my journalism classroom are a) finding time to do all the marking that a good journalism class requires, b) finding time to do my own writing, which will not go away, it is a passion, desire, drive that has to be allowed or I go crazy, c) keeping up with the latest stuff and trying to get my school to buy it for me.
Before becoming a teacher I worked in radio, TV and print, in small, medium and large markets. I know what I should be able to get the kids to do, and I want them to leave my class and be able to qualify to work in media immediately. That is a big dream for high school kids.
I have stopped printing a newspaper, and switched to an on-line format, which is cheaper, faster and easier.
On going Professional Development would be another challenge. I am more advanced than most of the conferences, so I have to find ways to get new ideas and see various newsrooms to envision my kids working there.
I am glad this group is out there, to share ideas and find ways to answer these challenges.

I teach in a very small town in Texas. We work on the yearbook the first half of the year and then on a newpaper the second half. This year I think we are going to focus on an online paper. With all the cuts this year, I am worried about our journalism department as it is. The local high school does not even have one. I find this very sad and I hope to be able to split my time between campuses next year so the kids will at least have that option.
I love working on the yearbook. This year (being my first year here), I made sure we had more than a picture book, but a piece of journalistic work they can be proud of. It was really good for a small town middle school yearbook. I am so proud of my students. They only complained about once a day lol
