I just used Spirited Away as a primary text for a unit addressing growth, change, adaptation, institutions and friendship (among other things). The other texts used: Song of Solomon, the graphic novel "The Adventures of Johnny Bunko," Emerson ("always do what you are afraid to do"). Related suggested animated texts: Kiki's Delivery Service (I'd replace The Little Mermaid with this movie or perhaps Ponyo), UP, Wall-E and the Wizard of Oz. From TV: Lost and The Wire.

Here's what these texts say: act for the good, don't be fearful, trust yourself, choose your people well, work toward your strengths, do what needs to be done, but don't be afraid to make mistakes.

Actually, I'd replace all of the movies above with Miyazaki movies:
