Making Curriculum Pop

Hi All.  I am interested using clips from movies to teach students the elements of plot using popular movies.

Does anyone have suggestions for freeware/inexpensive software that can grabs clips with the soundtrack intact?

I have quicktime pro, but it only does screencasts with a microphone, but will not grab an internal soundtrack.

Thanks in advance.

Handbrake and MPEG Streamclip have worked well for me.

Since you are using clips a bunch - do you have any interest in being a beta tester on a new site I am developing where teachers can crowdsource movie clips? I am hoping that unlike Teachertube, Khan Academy, Teachwithmovies, or TED ED this site would allow teachers to share their own clip ideas, suggest topics or subjects that need clips, and find pop culture media from other teachers around the world. Basically I am talking about something that is like movieclips.com for teachers

Here is a slightly clunky example of what I am talking about, and my recent blog post illustrates some of my design goals for the future of this concept. While my team and I have been supported and encouraged by many leaders in education, design, and media, we are lacking in actual teacher awareness and support. That is where you come in! We are looking for beta testers who are willing to use this site and provide us feedback on how it can be improved. What do you think?

Greg- Thanks!  I would be happy to work with your site.  My first feedback, is a link to Art on the Subjects page :)

ha ha - for sure, thanks a bunch! I will keep you posted. We will have the new site up and running in hopefully a week or so.

Hey Grant! We just got the site up last night. It has some room to grow but I would really appreciate any feedback from you. Feel free to set up an account and test it out. Thanks!

I use WinTV, manufacturered by Hauppauge.  It's a small peripheral device that interconnects between my DVD/VCR player (connected to cable) and my laptop.  Installation was easy and it's user friendly. I found mine at Best Buy for around $100. It has a built-in TV tuner which is handy for grabbing spots or TV shows too.

I have been using a freeware download called Handbrake. It is easy to use and produces fine copies. I use lots of clips in my classroom and have always used this program with no difficulty.
