"1861---The Cause," recalls slavery; the abolitionist movement; the firing on Fort Sumter; the formation of Union and Confederate armies; and the first Battle of Bull Run (Manassas). Voices include Sam Waterston (Lincoln). 

Monday April 4

A Very Bloody Affair—1862; Forever Free-1862
Parts 2 and 3 examine the naval clash of ironclads; the battles of Shiloh and Antietam; the Emancipation Proclamation; and Mathew Brady photos.

Tuesday April 5

8pm-10:30pm

Simply Murder—1863; Universe of Battle—1863
Parts 4 and 5 cover the battles of Chancellorsville, Vicksburg and Gettysburg; the first use of black soldiers; Lincoln’s Gettysburg address

Wednesday April 6

The Valley of The Shadow of Death—1864; Most Hallowed Ground—1864
Parts 6 & 7 include Grant and Lee profiles, Sherman moving on Atlanta; battles from Wilderness to Petersburg in Virginia; conditions in hospitals and prison camps

Thursday April 7

War is All Hell;1865; Better Angels of Our Nature-1865

Part 8 and the conclusion; Sherman marches to the sea; Richmond falls; Lee Surrenders at Appomattox; Lincoln is assassinated. Also: reflections on the war by historians.
