Hi Margie, this is a great question - consider posting it as a crowdsource question in the Art & Visual Cultures group or even the Media Lit group as I think those are the places where people will have the most expertise on what you're looking for!
I'm looking for some articles on visual learners - simple studies. Any ideas?
Hi Ryan! Happy New Year to you too...the family is great. The boys are all getting so big its crazy. How is your family? Your little one must be over a year old or so? I don't have to tell you how fast they grow.
Well, I planned on teaching math, but I landed this business/technology job instead. I love the flexiblity I have, now I'm just hoping for a few good suggestions.....Thanks to you for all you do on the Ning. It is such a great resource!
Hi Melissa. How are you? That is a great question. FWIW, big questions on the comment wall are not easy for folks to respond to and get buried over time :(
Consider moving this question above in the discussion forum as a crowdsource ? When you post your ? above it has a URL and it will be in there for the next person with a similar ? AND I can broadcast the question to the whole Ning on crowdsource Tuesday so you can get MORE feedback!
Happy New Year and congrats on the gig! It sounds exciting! I hope the family is doing well!
RRG:)
Thank you so much Chris and Suzanne for your suggestions...I will spend some time checking out these sites!
Melissa,
The resources here can definitely get you started
Melissa, you might want to check out P4Games.org.
I am teaching a high school modern technology class and I been given a lot of flexibility with what topics I can cover. I'm curious as to whether any of you has ever taught a unit on video game design. Just wondering if anyone might have any suggestions regarding accessible and cheap (or better yet, free!) software for beginning game designers....any and all ideas are greatly appreciated!
Hi Molly - that sounds like a great resource - thank you for sharing! Don't be shy and do consider making it at proper discussion forum post up above us on in the Teach with the Moving Images group. That way your resource won't get buried down here on the comment wall AND it will have a URL that we can use to share the resource during a week in review!
Check out Supporting Students in a Time of Core Standards (Sarah Brown Wesslilng, NCTE Fall 2011). Wessling gives great examples of the depth of learning that can take place when using film. In Chapter 3: "Using Viewing to Elicit Complex Thinking", she starts with film trailers to teach critical viewing, progresses to full films, has students create trailers and then connects this all to reading. Chapter 4 "Integrating Active Listening and Speaking Activities," she integrates film, Interenet sources, and print throughout a course on heroic men and women culminating in nomination and acceptance speeches for hero of the year. Awesome ideas.
